The Sumitomo Rubber Group has achieved a major breakthrough in renewable energy with China’s tyre factories, now using 100% sustainable resources to meet their needs.

The Sumitomo Rubber Group has made an important step towards creating a carbon-free society by transitioning their two tyre factories in China to purchasing all electric power from renewable sources.

These two tyre factories are set to reduce their total annual CO2 emissions by an estimated 70% from 2020-2021 levels. In addition, with plans for solar power generators in the works throughout this year (second half), these facilities will now be able to achieve even lower overall production rates than before.

The new Corporate Philosophy Framework from the Sumitomo Rubber Group emphasises sustainable business activities while coexisting in harmony with society and nature. We hope this will be a major driving force for strategic group wide efforts to realise these ideals.

In August 2021, we announced a new sustainability policy. The goal is to reduce total CO2 emissions at all of our group factories worldwide by 50% (compared with 2017 levels) by the year 2030 and then achieve full carbon neutrality for ourselves in 2050. To get there though, it won’t just be about switching out old parts or installing some solar panels on top-everyone needs an active role here, so I’m going ahead with this challenge called “Driving Our Future Challenge 2050”. This will require us as businesses–from manufacturing plants right through distribution networks – to work together towards solutions that benefit society both environmentally.
